Technology & Design

Welcome to the Technology and Design web page. This will give you some insight about the department and what goes on within the different year groups.

Technology and Design is part of the Science department within the school and has got 3 teachers. These are; Mr.G Tumelty (Head of Department), Mr.R Regan and Mrs A Mc Cann, the department also has a full time technician. There are 2 manufacturing rooms, 1 planning room and 1 systems room within the department. Click here to view the rooms.

Key stage 3 Technology & Design.

All students in Key Stage 3 have Technology as part of their weekly timetable. Currently all key stage 3 pupils have one double period per week. In each year group the students will complete at least 4 units of work. At the end of Key Stage 3 pupils then have the option to take the subject on at GCSE level.

Year 8 Technology & Design

In Year 8 the students complete 4 units of work. Throughout these units students gain the opportunity to work with wood metal and plastics. The units are as follows:

  • Unit 8.0 - Safety in Technolog - Picture frame project.
  • Unit 8.1 - Key ring project.
  • Unit 8.2 - Graphics module – One point perspective.
  • Unit 8.3 - Electronic steady hand game.

Year 9 Technology & Design

In Year 9 pupils build on their knowledge gained in Year 8. They further develop their skills in working with hand tools and improve on their design skills. Students also progress in terms of systems knowledge and understanding during this year. The units of work are as follows:

  • Unit 9.0 - Safety and Safe Practice – working with wood.
  • Unit 9.1 - Electronics theory.
  • Unit 9.2 - Electronic night light.
  • Unit 9.3 - Mechanical toy project.

Year 10 Technology & Design

In Year 10 students cover the 4 main types of control. This then provides students with the opportunity to learn about pneumatics and computer control. During this year students also get the opportunity to work with wood, metal and plastic and to use new pieces of equipment and processes. Students at the end of Year 10 have the option to either take on the subject at GCSE or decline it. Students are informed in advance of the entrance criteria for selection at GCSE. The Units of work in Year10 are:

  • Unit 10.0 – Safe Practice in Technology.
  • Unit 10.1 – Pneumatic Control.
  • Unit 10.2 – Electronic Timing Project / Sports Car.
  • Unit 10.3 – Computer Control / ICT Accreditation.
  • Unit 10.4 – Mechanical Control.

Year 11 & Year 12 (GCSE) Technology.

In Technology we follow the CCEA specification. In Year 11 the majority of the GCSE syllabus is taught and therefore it is mostly theory based. However a small practical task is set to improve upon student’s workshop skills. Students also complete 2 focussed tasks in this year worth 10% of their final GCSE. In the 3rd term Year11 students begin their major project and this is generally a project of their choice.

Year 12 is mostly coursework based. Here students have to produce a Design folder and a practical piece. This is worth 50% of their GCSE. Most projects are based on electronics and this involves students designing their own circuits and then packaging them into their practical work.

The GCSE intake is 2 classes of 20 students in each. Click here to view samples of work.

AS and A2Technology & Design

It is expected that students considering taking AS Technology have at least achieved a grade B at GCSE level. Students follow the CCEA Specification at ‘A’ Level.

At AS level there are 3 modules. These are:

  • Unit 1: Product Design and Practice.
  • Unit 2: Coursework – Product Development.
  • Unit3: Systems and Control.

Click here to view samples of AS work.

At A2 there are also 3 modules. These are:

  • Unit 4: Coursework – In-depth Study
  • Unit 5: Coursework – Manufacturing
  • Unit 6: Systems and Control in Product Design.
